The Letter of Invitation Exercise
By Jessica Williams
Description: A letter written for your child, describing the life you’ve invited them to share with you. Answer the who, what, when, where and why questions below in prose, as in, “Dear Baby, Your father and I live in…and…” Make your letter descriptive and filled with intention as possible.
Purpose: This letter can be written before conception to invite your baby to join your family. The letter can also be written once you have your child(ren) and will serve as a guiding vision and a collective context to draw upon as you navigate the day-to-day joys and challenges of family life. You can write this letter for yourself as your own “guiding light,” or you can share with your partner-in-parenting if applicable. You may choose to share this with your grown child someday.
Questions to answer in your Letter of Invitation:
Who: Who are the people in our life? Parents, relatives, god-parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, and members of your religious, cultural or spiritual community.
What: What do we do in our daily life and how do we spend our time? Weekdays, weekends, hobbies, sports, exercise, education, community work, animals, music, books, arts, and holidays.
When: What is the special about this moment in time to be born into? What does this day and age have to offer and how does it resonate in your family?
Where: Where do we live and where do we go? Daily life, travel, neighborhood, nature, culturally important places, places of personal significance?
Why: What is the meaning behind our actions of the who, what and where? What are our core values, guiding principles, spiritual meaning, morals, and ethics?
